The Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant authorities have developed a website to update visitors with continually updated data regarding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The website features breaking news as well as background material about the spill and its implications to Gulf Coast economies. The site also includes instructions for responding to related problems that will likely follow over the next few weeks.
The crisis stems from a deepwater drilling platform some 50 miles southeast of Venice, La. An explosion and subsequent fire damaged the rig, which capsized and sank on April 22 after burning for hours. Authorities are still unsure of how much of the 700,000 gallons of onboard fuel burned before it sank.
The rig, owned by Transocean, is under contract to British Petroleum.
A website developed by the U.S. Government, British Petroleum and Transocean also has been developed to provide visitors with updated information.
