Thirteen years of 4-H involvement afforded Auburn University College of Agriculture sophomore Jessie Nichols the Ann Barr Endowed Scholarship for the current academic year.

Nichols, who has been an invested member of the Autauga County 4-H program since age seven, is honored to receive this scholarship award.

"I know Ann Barr invested her faith and time into the future leaders of America, and to receive this honor, I know that my years of hard work and dedication, and everything Ann Barr believed in is certainly paying off," said the agricultural communications student.

Ann Barr dedicated more than 33 years of her life to the Alabama 4-H program, followed by four years on the National 4-H Council. She began her career with Alabama Extension as an assistant home demonstration agent in Talladega County. It was there she learned of her great passion for youth.

In 2002, Barr was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame and the Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame in 2008.

According to Barr's National 4-H Hall of Fame online biography, a few days after her retirement, this scholarship was established. She was quoted responding, "I never wanted anything for myself, just for the boys and girls."

Nichols involvement in her county's 4-H program is none to be reckoned with. She climbed the leadership ladder by serving as greeter, social chair, chaplain, parliamentarian, vice president and president. In 2004, she also began riding with the Star Spangled Stampede Equestrian Drill Team, where she rode until spring of 2012. She served five of those years as the lead rider and team captain.

Nichols remains busy at Auburn serving as an Ag Ambassador for the College of Agriculture. After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans to pursue a master's degree in Animal Science.

"When I started with the 4-H program, all I could think about was being a student at Auburn University; 4-H has allowed me the opportunity to do so, and I could not be more grateful," she said.
