Madison County Extension office recently celebrated Urban Youth Farm Day. The event offered hands-on learning experiences that familiarized third, fourth and fifth grade students from Huntsville and Madison County School systems with life on the farm.
More than 200 elementary school students participated in the 17th annual program at Alabama A&M University’s Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station. Leisure activities introduced group activities such as hayrides, games and ice cream socials. “Come fly with me,” was a special treat offered by the Huntsville Rocketry Association. Educational events were coordinated by Urban Regional Extension Agent Sylvia Oakes. Educational demonstrations that related to insects, animals and plants were shared by both rural and urban Extension agents, specialists and more than 50 community volunteers.
“This type of event is becoming more and more important as our youth are further and further removed from the farm and any understanding of where their food comes from,” says Stan Windham, assistant director of ACES program operations and innovations.
