Same here.. I will also be looking into the disk that they brought in now. I had looked at all the paper and there was not a sheet in which to write things down on. I am looking through the folder again now that they came home with from the meeting and the only information in it is describing the types of chickens, isolation, traffic control, sanitation, warning signs, terminology, brooding, a 4-H sign up sheet. parts of a chicken. Whomever packed the folders may have missed packed a few. I sure hope I can pull a copy off the disc. I sure hope the disc will work on my computer. if not I believe my son may not get a far shot at the competition.

Gage,
I can't think of a reason for this to happen at this stage of the production. Is it isolated to the one chick or is others doing it as well? Have you noticed any small bugs or mites on the chicks?

Luke,
We have had really good luck with these chicks in the past. This year the losses have been a little higher and mostly from the barred rocks. The hatchery we use is in Texas. The chicks may have been under more stress during hatching and shipping than in the past. Most of the losses have been from the Barred Rocks. The past years the losses seldom were over one or two per project. This year we have had losses of 4 to 6 per project. We are very sorry for this. It is probably nothing that the 4-Her's are doing wrong.
Those stress loses should have only occurred during the first two weeks of the project. If you are having losses at this time of production you need to make sure that you are not overheating the chicks with supplemental heat. Also you need to make sure that the chicks are well ventilated. You should make sure that the air is stirring in the brood area by placing a fan over the area.
If losses continue please contact one of the Extension Agents to discuss and/or examine the birds.

Hannah, I am sorry to hear that you have lost 2 of your chicks. Sadly that is part of raising animals. The chicks were hatched in Texas and had a long trip in mail trucks. That was a lot of stress on them so I am sure that is part of what may have happened. I hope that the rest of your chicks have settled down by now and are doing good. Keep us informed.

Hope is dead. I want to cry but i have to be streong for Hope. Only 23 chicks left. Today i feel rushed and tired and sad. Don't know what tomorrow holds(hopefully no dead chicks). I did get Hope's beak open. I grinded up a small piece of chick feed and put some in Hope's mouth then put some water in a medicine dropper thing and squirted one small drop in Hope's beak. Gonna go to bed and get rest for tomorrow. I will post later. Bye! :(

23 chicks left. Maybe. 1 chick was pushed againset the side of the feed bowl. It is still breathing but has it eyes closed, still moves some. I named it hope because thats al it has left. My dad said that it probably won't live. My brother was upset to see it was the first to go. My brother said come pray with me Hannah. My dad said it won't eat or drink. I'm scared it can't open its beak and is just giving up. I gently tried to open its beak to some water in it but it wouldn't budge. I'm already etionally attached to them. We also found a run away. We have no idea how it got out but i went into the garage and heard a loud chirping. I found it in the corner with a few cobwebs on it's head. Well i got to go will post more tomorrow

Our chicks are trying to fly the coop as well. We put a lid on our brooder when we built it and looking back that was a very smart idea. My chicks almost have all of their new feathers in and are in the "ugly stage" but I still think they are cute. We are now getting their coop/chicken run built this weekend and I hope to have them in the coop within the next 2 weeks. I have posted pictures and short videos on the Etowah County 4-H Facebook page if anyone wants to see them.

Feathers are missing and stuff is sticking out like part of the inside where the feathers grow. Is anyone elses doing this or do i need to do something defferent? If I could put pictures on here I would so everyone can see what I am talking about.

Kyle,
I am sorry that it has taken so long to answer this comment. We are working through a few problems with the blog page.

Unfortunately some of the chicks were under stress from shipping. Blindness is rare but not completely unheard of. Regardless of whether it was blind or not the lack of movement and loss of appetite is a definite sign that something was wrong. There was probably nothing that you could have done to prevent that loss.

High ammonia levels can and sometimes do cause blindness. It is always a good idea to keep the chicks in a well-ventilated place on clean bedding. You should change out the bedding regularly to avoid ammonia buildup. Although ammonia buildup cannot always be detected with the nose, in this project I have found smell to be pretty accurate. If you smell ammonia then you need to change the bedding.

I have hand sanitizer right where I keep my chickens and I use it before and after I take care of them each day then when I go in the house I was my hands with soap and water to make sure that my chicks don't get sick and neither do I. If we are all careful it won't be a problem.

Approved
We had one of ours do the same. It layed around as well. I do not believe it was blind because it did move its head around to noise. I believe it was just not a going to make it regardless. we give our chicks 6 drops of vetRX in 2liters of water for their drink and have not had anymore pass. they are all doing wonderful. I will not guarantee in the same success but am passing along what we are doing here. best of luck with your chicks Kyle Langley... We have started a Facebook page too to help people get a better Birds eye view of what fun we are having with our chicks.. they are a blast.. so tame too... (this is the Mom writing too not Andrew He is just 10and at ball practice..)

Me and my family enjoy raising my chickens. I had one pass and we wash our hands before we go in every time. We have other chickens and we do not wear the same shoes in the pens either. My baby chicks enjoy playing football with me. they chase the pine shaving in my hand and grab it and then chase each other after it. they are now jumping up on the fence dividing them from the rest of the pen and perching on my shoulder. I love my baby chicks.

Very good point Jesse. Thanks for your comment.

I am raising my chicks at my grandmothers farm and she breeds very rare chickens so she won't let any of us near her chickens and peacocks until we wash up really good and use hand sanitizer too. I know that chickens could make us sick but we can make them sick too if we bring germs to them on our hands. We have a rule that we do the same amount of clean up BEFORE we handle the birds as we do AFTER we handle the birds. I just wanted to mention this because it seems like spending that little bit of extra time is better than being sorry for not doing it later.

Ok so first week of the project is done and I lost one more silver lace wyandotte on the third day I had them. We had to really watch the weather last weekend over the holiday because it got so hot. Last night we had to use an extra light because it got so cool even though it was time to decrease the temperature by 5 degrees. All of the others that I have are doing great and getting so big. They have begun to get feathers on their wings, sprouting tail feathers and starting to get combs on the tops of their heads. It is amazing how much they have all changed in just one weeks time. I am also posting pictures of my chicks on my facebook page to let my friends and family know how my project is goin.

Already, one of my chickens died from starvation. All the others have survived and, we figured that the one that died was blind. This was because when it was alive we saw it had only spent its time laying down and not doing anything else. So, how can we tell if another chicken is blind or slow on development.

It is so nice to see CTSO and University groups partnering together to combat the bullying issue in the US. As a youth motivational speaker , my job typically entails working with students to combat these issues where they start-- at homes, on school campuses, and in communities around the country.

While many groups can focus on "stopping" the problem, it takes true leadership to encourage others to lead through kindness.

I randomly stumbled upon this article when checking out some events online. Wishing you the best of luck with your conference this summer!

This is my first year doing the chick chain too and I love my chicks. Sadly, I have lost a third chick, but the rest are doing very well. My dad says that it's an acceptable mortality rate (whatever that means) for the number of chicks we have. I cannot believe how fast they are growing and they have feathers now on their wings. They are eating and drinking well and are ful of energy. We are having fun raising our little chicks! This is an awesome project! Good luck!

I am so glad to see all the good comments.
We have reordered the chicks that were short and are expecting them in the offices by thursday. If you did not get your whole order please call your extension office on Thursday morning.
Remember that these chicks need fresh water and feed in front of them all the time. Also it is important to follow the proper tempertature schedule. Over the next few days you will need to make sure that you are not providing too much heat during the day. The chicks should be in a shady area.
Please continue to use this blog to keep updated and share you experiences with others. We all learn together.
